Leigh Defeat Oldham in Season Opener
LEIGH 22 OLDHAM 14
By Dave Parkinson
A crowd of 3,070 at the Coliseum saw the Centurions defeat an Oldham team containing three ex-Leigh players by 22-14.
It was a tough encounter, and Leigh made the better start. In the third minute Paul Rowley worked down the right for Sean Richardson to dummy and send Damian Munro over with a peach of a pass to his outside. Lee Sanderson and Simon Svabic traded penalties as greasy conditions underfoot hampered both side's attacking ambitions. The pair kicked two goals each as the Centurions edged the half, taking an 8-4 lead to the interval.
It was all Oldham early in the second half . Neil Roden broke from the kick off only to be hauled down on halfway. On their next possession, the Roughyeads showed their attacking potential when Paul Anderson was allowed to get the ball away and full-back Gavin Dodd raced over. Svabic couldn't convert, and then surprisingly missed with the sort of penalty he used to lap up in his Leigh days.
With the game finely poised John Hamilton, scorer of just one try in 32 appearances last year, broke his season duck with the finish to a five man move that he started from a play-the-ball. Sanderson struck the goal but better was to come for the Centurions when Munro took a pass from John Duffy 30 metres from his own line and raced away for a spectacular try.
Although Oldham replied through Phil Farrell, Leigh made absolutely certain of the points when Pat Weisner sent the supporting Dave Alstead over from 20 metres.
